Whether you love them or want to burn them, depictions women as witches continue to fascinate us.
I’ve been really into witches in art recently and I guess it’s an interest that’s been in the background for a while. But since I decided to read more about the history of witches such as the Malleus Maleficarum (a 15th Century German witch-hunting manual) it’s become a bigger fascination.
Depictions of witches range from creepy crones to sexy vixens, not only in popular media (13 Best Witch Movies Of All Time names just a few, not to mention the plethora of books available!) but historically in art as well.
So I thought I’d share the things I discover in a series of posts on witches, starting with a selection of beautiful and uncanny classical paintings.

Know any other classical or modern paintings of witches I could add to this list? Fascinated by these magical paintings too? I’d love to hear about it below!
